Hall Road Rangers travelled the distance to Eccleshill United on Wednesday evening turning out a master class against their opposition to progress to the third round of the league cup. Rangers won comfortably 4-1 against the side joint top with them in the league.
The previous season’s goal fests against Eccleshill saw Rangers draw 5-5 and lose 4-3 against the boys from Bradford. Their league cup exploits where also goal sodden as they exited the league cup in the first round away against Yorkshire Amateur going down 5-4.
Their turn around under the hands of Manager Dave Ricardo was clear to see. Leading from the back Captain Ash Dexter powered the visitors into a 2-0 lead with both goals coming from well delivered corner balls.
Marcus Edwards gave the home side faint hope of a revival on 57 minutes but with the introduction of Chris Spinks as a second half substitution that hope was dashed. Spinks first, an audacious chip over the keeper from range made it 3-1 before a jinking hip swivelling one on one move with the Eccleshill keeper put the game to bed at 4-1.
After the game Manager Dave Ricardo was delighted with his side’s performance.
“Tonight’s gave us a chance to use all of the squad as well as giving debuts to two 16 year old players brought through from the reserve team in Brad Needham and Jacob Todd. Both acquitted themselves very well. In missing the likes of Sam Belcher, Scott Phillips, Jody Barford, Dane Mortimer and Will Ramsey and putting Chris Spinks on the bench it gave the chance to Corey Mortimer, Craig Muitehead, Jordan Douglas and Joe Cooper to show they could complete 90 mins and maintain their quality.”
“They were excellent throughout and deserve all the accolades they received after the game.”
“The result did come at a cost with injuries to Jamie Reeson and James Piercy who are both doubtful for Saturday’s tough home fixture against Hallam.”
“However after this evening I am confident every player that steps foot on the pitch will give everything they have.”
Rangers will now look forward to the next round in which they take on Premier League Division side Pickering Town at home. Before then though they face 7th placed Hallam at home on Saturday. Kick off will be 3pm at Haworth Park.
