Norstar United got their pre season campaign underway with a narrow 3-2 loss to premier league outfit Hessle Rangers. There is great mutual respect between the two teams and the game was played in brilliant spirit.
The game started with Hessle dominating the ball. They made their experience tell and moved Norstar all over the park, making it very difficult and tiring in scorching conditions. Matt Lucid, Danny Wilkin and Tom Briggs moved the ball out from the back brilliantly, with Matt Barker orchestrating and dictating the tempo of the game. Hessle got their reward for a terrific start after just a few minutes, when Dan shaw found space on the left hand side, and picked out an unmarked Ben Killingsworth for an easy finish.
Soon after that it was 2-0 to Rangers when a defensive mix up between Jordan Hunt and Luke Fyvie meant Dan Shaw had only the keeper to beat, and did so, passing calmly into the bottom corner. A drinks break after 20 minutes in the tropical conditions then provided Norstar with a chance to regroup, and a change in formation from a 4-5-1 to a 3-4-3 was to prove a master stroke. Norstar soon began to press a lot higher up the field, and stopped the Hessle defence playing out so easily. Chances came and went for Norstar, with James Richmond, Aidan Welham and Ryan Krebs all going close. Finally, they got on the score sheet. A nice bit of play from Ryan Krebs sent new boy Connor Watson through on goal, and there was never any doubt about the result, he lobbed the keeper superbly to give Norstar a lifeline. Half time 2-1 to Hessle.
The second half began in a similar fashion to the end of the first, with the youthful Norstar side enjoying large spells of possession and chances a plenty. Tim Holmes finished off a lovely team move from back to front, when he fired in from the edge of the box to make it 2-2. Norstar benefited from the willing runners in Nathan Malek and Lewis Jones, who set the tone with some excellent pressing and could of been 3-2 up, but Jake Bristow just couldn’t quite reach Richmonds through ball. The final goal of the game would be a scrappy one, when a long throw in helped on by Matt Lucid, was turned into his own net by Luke Fyvie. Full time 3-2 To Hessle Rangers.
Both sides had good spells in the game, but Hessle just edged it in the end. Craig Holmes and Matt Barker where the stand out players for Hessle, pulling the strings in midfield. Norstar will learn a lot from this experienced Hessle side, and gave a very good account of themselves. Aidan Welham and Lewis Jones were the best for Norstar, making tremendous debuts. Coach Danny Cutsforth will be delighted with what he’s seen, and will take great confidence going into Wednesday’s fixture against Hessle United. Many thanks to Nick Hunt, who officiated the game superbly, and good luck to Matt Bulless and Hessle Rangers for the upcoming season.
