The Hull Silver Tournament at The Badminton Centre saw Alex Marritt return to the courts on which he played as a boy before moving on to university and becoming one of the highest rated singles players in the country.
Alex justified his number 1 seeding, defeating a tiring Harry Wang from Hampshire in three hard fought games to claim the men’s singles title and with his partner Nathan Rossiter in the men’s doubles beating fellow local players Mike Reid and Mark Pratt, again in three tough games in an all Yorkshire final.
Young rising national star Sian Kelly aged just 15 won the women’s singles overcoming Hannah Boden in an all Yorkshire final once again. This was especially rewarding for Sian as she had only recently finished a long and arduous rehab programme needed after a serious injury.
All the experience of Helen Davies of Cheshire and Sarah Panesar of Yorkshire was brought to bear in the women’s doubles in which they defeated Tiara Samuel of Derbyshire and Emily Witts of Nottinghamshire in the final.
Harry Wang and Tiara Samuel made up for their losses in the singles events by winning the mixed doubles and defeating local player Mike Reid and his partner Rachel Vickers from Cheshire.
There were 80 players competing in the event from as far away as the Isle of Man and Guernsey. 100 matches were played over the two days and the young players of the Hull & East Riding Performance Centre did sterling work helping with the running of the tournament.
