On 15th July 2016 SMO had the pleasure of spending the day photographing and filming schools from across our four local authority areas of the Humber as part of the 5th annual Humber School Games Summer Festival.
Over 1000 young athletes competed at Hymers College in Hull after competing within their school and with other schools in their area.
Athletes competed in one of eight sports including; Rounders, Softtball, Hi5 Netball, Orienteering, Boccia, Tag Rugby, Mini Tennis and Tri Golf. Schools also got involved with Change4Life activities which helped students learn more about what they eat and the importance of an active lifestyle.
The day was also a celebration of competition winners Isabel, Callum and Ben who were awarded Amazon Kindles by the Humber School Games sponsors The Education Network.
Isabel from South Holderness Technology School designed the medals awarded to first, second and third place competitors. Callum from Fairfield Academy wrote the winning oath for athletes to abide by during competitions. And Ben from South Cave Primary designed the winning banner as voted on Twitter.
The day also featured special guest, BMX World Champion Keelan Phillips who encouraged athletes that practice was the key to success and treated the crowd to a stunt performance showing great talent and skill.
Throughout the day athletes had filled out tags with their sporting aspirations which were attached to biodegradable balloons. Led by professional boxer Tommy Coyle, the balloons were released and the sky was splashed with blue, orange, purple and yellow, representing Hull, North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire and East Riding respectively. Tommy encouraged athletes to reach for the stars and to persevere with their sport ambitions.
Active Humber’s Chief Executive, Gary Hood attended and said: “As always our Summer Festival was a great success. We’re proud to have seen so many young athletes doing their best at the sport they love. It’s a fantastic journey to be involved in, seeing these young people get better every year. I’m looking forward to see what next year’s Humber School Games will bring.”
