Members of the #BlokesUnited Just Play football session are today celebrating after they won the prestigious Just Play Centre of the Year Award at yesterday’s glittering FA Mars Just Play Awards at the House of Commons in London.
Shortlisted with three other FA Mars Just Play Centres the award recognises the significant success the project has made in encouraging more adults to get back into football. The award also recognises the passion the project has for doing good through the power of football in a fun, inclusive and no judgmental environment.
Introduced at the turn of the year #BlokesUnited was set up by Vicar Phil Lamb and Just Play officer Chris Johnson to help tackle the growing problem of men suffering from mental health issues such as anxiety and depression On offer is the opportunity for men from Hull and East Riding to attend a turn up and play football session and then stay behind after the game and talk about any issues they may be facing. Key to the success of the project is the relaxed environment and non-judgemental approach adopted by its patrons.
Members of the #BlokesUnited session will now travel to meet the England team at a St Georges Park training session as a reward for their participation in the project.
Just Play Football Development Officer, Chris Johnson said “This is an extremely proud moment for everyone involved in the project. We cannot thank the local community enough for their support in helping us win this award and we now hope it manifests into more people attending and participating in the #BlokesUnited project”
