#BlokesUnited to meet new England manager!

A group of men from the from the #BlokesUnited project will travel to St Georges Park on Tuesday 30th August to meet the new England supremo Sam Allardyce and the latest crop of players charged with bringing glory to the nation. The trip is reward for being named FA Mars Just Play Centre of the Year 2016 with six men from the project invited to watch the England squad take part in Allardyce’s first training session as the national manager.

#BlokesUnited was awarded the title of FA Mars Just Play Centre of the Year 2016 for the work it does in encouraging men to open up and speak about their mental health. Set up in January of this year #BlokesUnited has seen over 50 men attend its turn up and play football sessions in Hull with men from across the region attracted so far. Chosen by public vote the award was given at a prestigious awards ceremony at the House of Commons back in June with special recognition given for the passion the project has for doing good through the power of football in an inclusive and non-judgmental environment.

Set up by Vicar Phil Lamb and Just Play officer Chris Johnson to help tackle the growing problem of men suffering from mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. The project has continued to grow with additional support groups in Hull and Hornsea now available and a fully affiliated football team called #BlokesUnitedFC also created.

Just Play Football Development Officer, Chris Johnson said “The trip to St Georges Park on Tuesday is an extremely satisfying occasion for everyone connected with the #BlokesUnited project. When we set out on the journey to help men improve their mental health we never ever thought it would achieve the success it has done so, so quickly. Now the challenge is to continue spreading the word about #BlokesUnited and encourage more men to get involved with the project”’

The next #BlokesUnited session takes place this Saturday at Goals Soccer Centre in Hull and starts at 10am. It costs only £3 to participate in with people of all abilities and fitness levels welcome.
