In SMO’s first full feature length coverage, Bridlington Town and North Ferriby battled it out to become to East Riding Senior Cup winners, with Brid looking to the retain the trophy for a second season.
600 excited fans turned up to the KCom stadium for the biggest game in East Riding Football.
Unsurprisingly, Ferriby, even with several changes from Saturday, started the game off well, obviously on a high from their unbelievable promotion to the National League, but Brid’s Keeper, James Hitchcock, pulled off a couple of superb saves in the first half to keep the game level.
Brid came back into the game and the second half of the first period saw chances for both sides. Brid had a period of good pressure in the last 5 minutes of the first half but dogged defending from Ferriby saw them hold out until half time. The score 0-0.
Half time saw some fantastic participation from Walking football teams and junior footballers who were given the opportunity to play on the pitch during the break.
The teams came out for the second half and the Seasiders must have had a fantastic team talk from manager Gary Allanson as they came out all guns blazing. The pressure piled on Ferriby and eventually the deadlock was broken after a brilliant move down the wing from Brid was superbly volleyed home by Joel Sutton.
After the game, lifelong Hull City fan, Joel stated that it had been his lifelong dream to score the winner at the KC stadium and Town only had 25 minutes to hold out for his dream to come true.
The temperature raised after the goal, and both sides started to put in some hard challenges forcing the referee to brandish a few yellow cards.
Town had their backs against the wall in the closing minutes and dropped deeper into their own half allowing the Villagers to pile on the pressure. However, determination, fight and a stand out performance from man of the match James Hitchcock won Bridlington Town FC the final and the title of East Riding Senior Cup champions!
A brilliant effort from the Seasiders and a great way to finish the season, Congratulations!
