Elloughton Blackburn Under 10s celebrated a hard fought victory in the annual South Cave FC tournament yesterday; the first time the team have triumphed in a competitive tournament since their formation in 2012.
The team, also known as the Hurricanes, narrowly edged their way into the final after a thrilling semi-final through which a penalty shootout and a strong save from goalkeeper Chris Randerson was the only way to separate the two teams. This set up a final against Rawcliffe Juniors FC who had earlier beaten Elloughton in the group stages, but were outdone in the final thanks to two goals from Matthew Skelton.
Coached on the day by Brian Wilson and John Gilbert, the tournament was a poignant ending for team manager Mr Gilbert who stands down as manager after four years as his role is taken over by John Page who will continue to run the team with Mr Wilson.
John said: “What a tremendous day for everyone yesterday. South Cave always organise a great tournament, though as you can imagine for us this was the best yet. I agreed with the coaches that this would be my final season in a manager’s role. Whilst it’s with sadness that I step aside it is with a greater sense of pride that that I’ve had the pleasure of working with a team of boys and girls who are not only gutsy footballers, but ones with a great sense of fun and really are the best of friends.”
