MATCH REPORT: Eccleshill United vs Hall Road Rangers – NCEL Division 1

Hall Road Rangers traveled to 3rd placed Eccleshill United on Wednesday evening, coming away with three points and placing themselves on top of the NCEL division one table.  In a fantastic footballing display Dave Ricardo’s lads had to dig deep in order to take the plaudits and points from a talented Eccleshill side.  Running out 3-2 winners of the night involved coming from 2-0 down and securing the win deep into injury time.

Having won 4-1 only a few weeks ago in the league cup at Eccleshill Rangers would have been forgiven if they assumed the league match would be a similar walkover.  It wasn’t.  Quickly at them from the kick off Eccleshill found themselves 1-0 up through Sam Bradley on 11 minutes and shortly thereafter 2-0 up through Luke Harrop.

Galvanised by the encouragement from Ricardo and his staff Alex Sherwood, fresh from a bike ride around Europe, got the first of Rangers come back goals on 35 minutes.  A Jamie Forrester brace on 50 and 89 minutes secured the win and propelled the Rangers to the top of the table.

After the game manager Dave Ricardo was jubilant.

“Last night’s result and performance in the main was the most pleasing of the season.”

“For the first 15 minutes Eccleshill were deservedly on top and we were mentally still stuck on the M62!”

“However for the next 30 minutes I was really pleased with the intensity from the lads especially Tom Bennent who lifted the team at every possible opportunity and drove us forward.  A great finish from Sherwood just before half time gave the lads the belief we could go on and win it.”

“I’m still looking for that perfect game where we can control for the majority of the game however the lads should be proud of their efforts.”

Rangers will now have to put league glory behind them as they turn their attention to the FA Vase on Saturday as they travel yet more miles to West Allotment Celtic.  Celtic lost their own midweek game 3-2 to Marske United FC so will be looking to get back to winning ways.  A coach for Rangers fans will be leaving Haworth Park at 10am for any wanting to travel with the team.
