#SMOsupport – Louie and Avas Dream

Following a fundraising evening at the willows club on Holderness road in Hull where sporting memorabilia from Hull City, Hull FC and Hull Kingston Rovers were auctioned off, SMO caught up with Dad Phil and Mum Emma to find out how things are going for the family in making Louie and Ava’s dream a reality. Let’s tell you a bit about their story.

Louie and Ava are twins and were born nine weeks prematurely. At birth they weighed just 4lb 1oz and 4lbs and spent 29 days in the neonatal unit at Hull Royal Infirmary receiving specialist care. After routine ultrasound scans it revealed that both Ava and Louie had developed cysts in their brains which would lead to cerebral palsy, a condition which affects co-ordination and movement. Ava now suffers from Diplegic Cerebral Palsy, affecting both her lower limbs, and Louie suffers from Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, affecting both upper and lower limbs.

In August 2015 Ava and Louie were both referred for an assessment for an operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy on the NHS to help reduce stiffness in the lower limbs by cutting nerves in the lower spine, giving them a better chance of Independently walking.

Ava was accepted through the NHS to have this pioneering surgery, however Louie was declined. Like any parent would, Emma and Phil want the best for their children and their goal is to now raise funds within the next year to enable them to take Louie to America to undergo the same surgery his sister was granted here in England. The funds raised will also go towards acquiring the equipment needed to progress both Ava and Louie’s development through intensive physiotherapy.

Team SMO wish the family the best of luck in raising the funds they need and hope you do also and we encourage any of you to help however you can.
